Focus on Workplace Eye Wellness
March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month. The workplace can pose certain occupational hazards, and we need to remember to take caution with our eyes while we work.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires eye protection for all U.S. workers who need it. But unfortunately, there are still tens of thousands of eye injuries leading to lost work time in the United States every year.
Like vision problems caused by eye diseases, most eye injuries can be avoided with a little preventative action. Many eye injuries can leave behind permanent damage causing lifelong vision problems. Many employers will use Workplace Eye Wellness Month to hold safety classes for their staff.
It’s important to be aware of some of the common dangers to the eyes in the workplace. Flying debris (big or small), chemicals, power tools, lawnmowers, incendiaries, and common paints and cleaners are all dangers to be on the lookout for at work.
And you don’t have to work in a laboratory or a lumber yard to get an eye injury. Even if you work in an office, be careful with your eyes. There is always room for precaution and safety measures. Using a computer for long periods of time at work can have side effects as well. So, no matter what your job entails, spend some time thinking about how you can take care of your eyes this month and beyond.
Most employers have their own safety requirements which adhere to state and federal guidelines. If they don’t, you can always provide for your own eye safety. No matter where you work, your employer shouldn’t have a problem with an employee trying to be safe. He or she will probably encourage it.
Here at Spektacles, we encourage all of our clients to take some time during this Workplace Eye Wellness Month to consider their eye safety at work. Be safe with those eyes. They are the only pair you have!
