Simple Solutions for Contact Lens Care
Contact lenses are a vision solution that have been around for decades, but they have evolved with technology in many ways.
A tried and true option for improving eyesight, contacts are a safe and reliable alternative to eyeglasses, if used properly and under the care of an optometrist.
It’s important to remember to follow the directions of your optometrist when using contacts. Improper use of contacts can cause infections and permanent damage to a wearer’s eyes.
If you’ve never worn contacts before, a member of our team of eye care professionals would be happy to consult with you to see if they are the best solution for your unique eye care needs.
Your eye care provider will determine the kind of contacts which are best for you.
Whatever kind is determined to be the best for your eyes, be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions. Here are some basic safety guidelines for contact lenses:
Take them out– Only wear your contact lenses for the amount of time that is recommended by your doctor. It is particularly important to take them out at night before going to sleep (unless they are extended wear). Your eyes can’t get healthy levels of oxygen while they’re closed for the duration of the night with certain types of lenses in them.
Avoid contamination– Don’t let the tip of your bottle of saline solution touch anything, be it fingers, the contacts themselves, etc. Never use anything else to clean your contacts, such as tap water or saliva. Both have microorganisms which can lead to infection and cause damage to your eyes. Wash your hands thoroughly with warm soap and water and keep them clean before you handle your contacts. This not only keeps contaminants out, but can also help to avoid getting irritants like dirt between the eye and the contact lens, which can lead to a scratched eye.
Clean them– Use a multipurpose solution to gently clean your contacts regularly. With clean hands, gently rub the contacts to remove surface build up of protein which can lead to discomfort and infection.
Follow these basic rules and the instructions of your eye care professional for a healthy contact lens experience.
