Protecting Eyes from Harmful UV Rays
Prevent Blindness America sponsors May as Ultraviolet Awareness Month. The goal of this event is to increase awareness of how ultraviolet rays can damage our vision. UV rays can increase the risk of cataracts and cancers of the eyes, including the eyelids and even deep inside the eyes.
Basic protective measures include wearing protective eyewear in the form of sunglasses whenever spending time outside. Sunglasses should be 100% UV absorbent for UVA and UVB rays.
Whether you want to wear prescription sunglasses or designer fashion styles, it is possible to find a wide variety of types and designs. When you are selecting a pair of sunglasses, be sure to look for styles that have the recommended protective characteristics.
Protective sunglasses are not the limit of protection. Hats can provide that little bit of extra protection. Pair a wide-brimmed hat or cap with your sunglasses for maximum protection.
There are times when the threat of Ultraviolet rays is more severe than others. When surrounded by reflective surfaces, Ultraviolet rays are even more dangerous for our eyes.
As we are spending time out on the water for leisure or sports activities or in snow, the harmful rays are reflected back up at our eyes making for a double threat. It’s more important than ever to wear protective eyewear in these times.
