Most people can recall a time when they have experienced red, pink, or sore eyes. Sometimes it’s a minor irritation of the blood vessels while other times it’s a redness that seems to overtake the whole eye. There are several reasons for sore, red eyes. Most commonly it’s caused by allergies to our environment, fatigue, improper wearing of contact lenses, or common eye infections. Persistent red eyes can also be a sign of a more serious problem and should be treated by an eye doctor. Here are some common causes of red eye.

Computer Eyes- Staring at a computer all day can cause your eyes to become fatigued. You blink less when working at a computer and this dries out your eyes. You can prevent computer eye syndrome by taking breaks, using eye drops, and even by wearing glasses designed to make working at a computer less strain on your eyes.

Dry Eyes- Your eyes need tears to stay healthy and properly lubricated. If your tear glands aren’t producing enough tears, then you’ll develop dry eye syndrome. Your eyes will become red and sore. Your doctor can prescribe lubricating eye drops or “artificial tears” to keep your eyes lubed.

Allergic Reactions- Pet dander, the dust in your home or workplace, pollen, and chemicals found in various common products can all lead to red, irritated eyes. Your immune system reacts to these substances and releases histamine to combat them. The blood vessels in your eyes swell due to the histamine and your eyes become red and watery. You can take medication or just avoid allergens to prevent red and watery eyes.

Contacts- Wearing your contacts improperly can cause all kinds of eye issues, including soreness and redness. Take them out when you’re supposed to and follow your eye doctor’s instructions. Wearing them too long prevents the eye from getting proper oxygen and allows microbes to take hold and cause infection.
