February has been designated as Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Low Vision awareness month, but these eye issues are important to know about all year round. Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), affects around fifteen million people over the age of fifty worldwide, and is the leading cause of diminished vision in senior citizens around the world. AMD acts very slow, and many sufferers might not even be aware they have it until significant vision loss has occurred.
AMD affects what is called sharp central vision. Sharp central vision is controlled by the macula, which is located on the back of the retina. Imagine only being able to see through the periphery of your eyes. Basically, it would be like if you held a tennis ball directly in front of your eye and could only function using what’s left of your vision in the peripheral. Without sharp central vision, the ability to perform basic daily tasks like driving, reading, or even walking to the mailbox is greatly reduced.
People at risk for AMD are the same people at risk for a stroke or heart attack. High blood pressure and cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and obesity all contribute to Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Blurred vision and blind spots are the most common symptoms of AMD. Others include objects seeming farther away than in reality and faces appearing blurry. If you experience any of these symptoms, see your eye care provider as soon as possible.
Don’t take your vision for granted. Make sure to schedule and keep regular appointments with your eye care provider to ensure good eye health and reduce your chances of developing complications like AMD.
