HVM_2014Here at Spectakles, nothing is more important to us than our patients’ eye health. In keeping with that basic philosophy, we want to join the National Eye Institute in celebrating Healthy Vision Month this May.

Healthy Vision Month is a campaign that serves as a way to celebrate healthy eyes and to promote awareness of eye health issues. Remember, you only get one set of eyes. Keep them safe and healthy with some simple eye care and regular visits with your eye care provider.

Get Regular Check Ups– Certain eye problems can only be detected by a professional after dilation. Be sure to make and keep appointments with your eye care provider. Annual visits with a trusted eye care provider are recommended in order for your doctor to detect and prevent any problems that may be present or growing.

Know Your Risks– Learn your family history to know what eye problems you may be genetically at risk for. Many eye conditions are hereditary. Talk to your family to learn if there have been any eye diseases you may be at risk for. Certain health issues also carry risks to our vision. Some can be prevented, but only through awareness and education can you truly take charge of your health.

Wear Sunglasses– Don’t forget how important it is to protect your eyes from the dangers posed by the sun. Wear sunglasses when you spend time outside. Make sure you get sunglasses marked UVA/UVB to get the proper protection. You can find reasonably priced sunglasses that provide maximum protection fairly easy these days.

Wear ProtectiveEyewear– Be sure to wear properly rated eye protection when playing sports. Especially impact sports like baseball, hockey, or any sport with fast moving projectiles. Remember eye safety when using power tools or when flying debris of any kind is present. A tiny metal or wooden shard in the eye can have lasting implications for life.

Live Healthy– Staying healthy and maintaining a normal weight will prevent Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to vision loss. Eat lots of fruits and veggies, including dark leafy greens to get the nutrients your eyes need. Get lots of omega-3 fatty acids found in many kinds of fish. Avoid smoking as it can increase the risk of cataracts and other vision problems.

These are some simple tips to keep your eyes healthy. Join us here at Spectakles as we celebrate healthy eyes!
